The ones to watch

The Future of Compute refers to the evolving landscape of computational power, infrastructure, and technologies that drive innovation in AI and new-generation user experiences. It encompasses the evolution beyond traditional Von Neumann architectures to embrace new modalities across seven core areas: semiconductors, networking, in-memory, neuromorphic, photonic, infrastructure and quantum computing.

While DeepTech as a whole is fundamental to the UK economy, at AlbionVC we believe that a pivotal focus for UK tech over the next decade will come from the Future of Compute companies as they sit at the heart of enabling the AI paradigm shift and are core to building tech stack that will enable AI to transform whole industries.

In partnership with Beahurst we’ve identified 69 UK Future of Compute startups to watch [deep dive on the full analysis here], methodology for inclusion is at the bottom of the page.

Methodology

Criteria for inclusion of companies in the cohort has been designed in partnership with Beauhurst:

  • Future of compute companies are a subsector of DeepTech – deeply technical, IP rich opportunities with a long-term moat across both software and hardware
  • Categories included in the Future of Compute analysis: Semiconductors, Networking, Quantum Computing, Photonics, Memory, Neuromorphic, Infrastructure
  • Founded on or after 1 January 2014
  • Located in the UK
  • Companies must be classified as high-growth as defined by Beauhurst’s high-growth triggers:
    • Has received equity investment
    • Is a scaleup
    • Has attended an accelerator
    • Has gone through an MBO/MBI
    • Is an academic spinouts
    • Has been featured in a high-growth list
    • Is a major grant recipient
    • Has received venture debt
  • Be classified under SIC codes:
    • 71200 – Technical testing and analysis
    • 72110 – Research and experimental development on biotechnology
    • 72190 – Other research and experimental development on natural sciences and engineering

Certain companies have been added to multiple categories as their core business spans more than one sub-sector. All information for categorisation was collected from websites, Beauhurst data and supplemented with knowledge within the team.

If you think you should be included on this tracker or would like to update the information shown, then please fill in the form here.

In 2025, the Future of Compute has emerged as a pivotal focus for UK tech. As Moore’s Law falters and AI-driven demands for computational power surge, the previously niche and unsexy fields of semiconductors and compute are now hot again as innovation is sorely needed.
